By Peter Whelan
The ICDL (International Computer Driving Licence) establishes your knowledge of IT fundamentals and your proficiency in the use of word-processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation applications, and the internet. The ECDL-Foundation is the global governing body for ECDL and ICDL member countries. Approved and accredited by the ICDL Foundation the ICDL is the world’s leading end user computer skills certification programme, it is an Internationally recognised computer skills qualification designed specifically for those who wish to gain a benchmark qualification in computing to enable them to develop their IT skills and enhance their career prospects.
ICDL helps provide proof of the computer competency of potential employees. ICDL is a standard definition and an actual measure of computer skills that is internationally recognised, and it provides a balance between employer needs and employee skills. ICDL is designed to help people both at work and at home.
Employers are increasingly relying on the ICDL to validate training courses and to recruit computer-literate staff and the ICDL is designed specifically for those who wish to gain the benchmark qualification in computing, to enable them to develop their IT skills and enhance their career prospects. The ICDL is not a "training course" but rather a competency standard that is acknowledged through testing. Benefits of ICDL Certification are that it establishes a computer competency standard for current and new employees, improve employee productivity, increases returns from investments in IT, reduces IT support costs, identifies training needs of employees and measures the effectiveness of training programs. ICDL should be used as an effective model for designing fundamental IT education and training in the organisation and reduces the inherent risks in recruiting, hiring and promotion decisions. The ICDL also helps motivate staff, increase their self-esteem and sense of achievement.
The ICDL has enabled significant organisations across many sectors to drive sustainable revenue growth and enhance differentiation and competitive advantage. ICDL is a standard definition and an actual measure of computer skills that is internationally recognised, and it provides a balance between employer needs and employee skills.
